BTC’s Children’s Enrichment Program
”Giving Kids a Chance through Dance”
Ballet Theatre Company’s Children’s Enrichment Program (CEP) was founded in 2002 to further BTC’s commitment to all children in the community by making dance available to children regardless of means. Through partnerships with area child advocacy organizations such as the Hillcrest Area Neighborhood Outreach Center (HANOC) and The Shelter for Women, Gray Lodge, BTC provides studio lessons to children who otherwise might not be able to participate. BTC hosts these workshops at the Ballet Theatre Company studio, with classes and dance supplies provided free of cost to participants. Through these classes, children not only receive dance instruction, but learn to appreciate dance as a means of creative expression and physical activity.

Nutcracker Outreach Performance 2010
Each year BTC offers a special, full-length performance of The Nutcracker for more than 600 children from 20 area child advocacy organizations as well as the Hartford and Bloomfield public schools. This performance is not only a delight for the children, many of whom may have never before experienced a live professional production, but it is also a highlight for the professional and student performers. In addition to seeing a full length
ballet, the children have the opportunity to learn more about the world of dance and theater during a question-and-answer and autograph session with the choreographer, production staff, and featured dancers. These experiences can open windows of opportunity, perhaps creating a lifelong love of the arts or even encouraging the next rising star as dancer, musician, choreographer, stage manager, or designer.
Area child advocacy organizations attending the Nutcracker include: Salvation Army’s Marshall House Shelter; Girls Inc of Greater Hartford, Nutmeg Big Brothers & Big Sisters; Gray Lodge Shelter for Women of Hartford; and the Hillcrest Area Neighborhood Outreach Center, (HANOC), West Hartford Special Needs program, The Bridge Family Resource Center, The Bridge – Winifred House, Asylum Hill Boys & Girls Clubs, My Sisters Place, Hartford Girls Detention Center, Hartford Interval House, Jewish Federation for Community Living, Greater Hartford Coalition for Equity and Justice, Riverview Hospital, River Valley Services, The Children’s Home, The Village for Families and Children, Wheeler Clinic, MARC, Inc.
