Ballet Theatre Company's The Nutcracker
What to Expect
Welcome to Ballet Theatre Company’s 11th Annual production of The Nutcracker. Again this year, BTC is excited to welcome back Roman Baca as Artistic Director for our 2012 production. Roman Baca is also Artistic Director for the New York City based Exit 12 Dance Company and has been a member of the Ballet Theatre Academy (BTA) faculty for 5 years. Roman will again be joined by Ballet Mistresses Lisa Fitzgerald, Lauren Sembersky, and Kate Sulikowski, and our Executive Director, Tracy Dorman who together along with the entire BTC staff will work hard to ensure that all dancers have a fun and rich artistic experience.
This team is surrounded by a dedicated group including active BTC Board of Directors and parent volunteers. Yet with all of this help there are still many exciting opportunities in which you, your family members, and others you know may participate in the delivery of a successful 2012 BTC Nutcracker production.
BTC is a 501c3 not for profit organization and similar to other dance companies ticket sales and other fees only cover 50% of the overall estimated production costs of $120,000. In order to fill the gap, we want to work with each of you in a way that is best for you and your family. Over the years BTC has discovered that the ways in which our families participate in the production vary greatly. For those families who want to be an active part of our production, behind stage, watching their children and their excitement we offer many volunteer opportunities during a performance including chaperones, costuming, boutique sales, box office sales, stage hands, ushers, and other roles. If you are interested in getting to know some of our Nutcracker professional dancers, BTC also provides an opportunity for dancer families to house professional dancers in their homes during performance week.
We also have great opportunities for those of you with strong connections in the greater Hartford Area to help boost organization fundraising, and program advertising and sponsorships. The 2011 BTC Nutcracker production reached over 2,000 people who while enjoying this professionally produced production also had the great opportunity to look through our Nutcracker program guide and view our sponsors and advertisers. In addition, BTC also posts each advertiser on our website with a link back to the advertiser’s website.
BTC also provides an opportunity for families who enjoy reaching out to others they know through the sale of Lyman Orchards Pies, Taste Books, and other direct fundraising activities. We also have those families who are simply just interested in making a direct donation to the production and for those persons, please feel free to reach out to Lisa or Doug at any time. In the end, we need each family to actively participate in some way in order to have a successful, artistic, and entertaining production.
A few frequently asked questions:
When are rehearsals? Beginning September 29, rehearsals will be on Saturday afternoons from 3pm-7pm. As needed there may be some additional rehearsals on Friday and Wednesday evenings – we will provide notice on our website and through email. BTC II members may have additional rehearsals during the BTA Level 4 class on Friday evenings and will also have a few Sunday afternoon rehearsals in NYC. Our full rehearsal calendar will be posted shortly at nutcracker.dancebtc.org.
What about Thanksgiving weekend? There will be rehearsal on the following Sunday afternoon. This rehearsal will be a full run-through with costumes. The Nutcracker professional dancers will join the children for this rehearsal in the BTC studio. Please mark your calendar; this is a required rehearsal. There will not be a rehearsal on Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday of that weekend.
Is attendance at all rehearsals mandatory? Yes, however, in those unavoidable instances, Dancers will be permitted one missed rehearsal, please send email to email@example.com or call Tracy at 860-570-0440. Please note that we frequently hear that, “My child knows his part...” Of that we are confident and what makes a successful production is the interaction of all dancers, working together. The character of a performance and its artistic success rests on every role in attendance to deliver successful and concerted rehearsals. So, help ensure a great production, manage your schedule, and keep washing those hands!
When are performances and, dress and tech rehearsals?
This year, BTC has been invited to return to The Hyde Cultural Center in Woodstock, CT. Dancers cast in this production will need to be at The Hyde Cultural Center early Saturday December 8th please check the calendar for updated information. (Note Jr. Company and BTC II dancers will have an earlier call time.)

Snow date: Monday, December 17 at 6:30pm
Where will performances take place? December 8 – Hyde Cultural Center in Woodstock, CT; December 12-17 - Hoffman Auditorium, University of Saint Joseph, West Hartford, CT
Will my child or dancer be in every performance? We know performances can be taxing and with schedules frequently being so busy for many students, BTC may double cast some roles and from time to time triple cast in order to make performance less demanding.
Can I dance in the production? We thought you’d never ask! BTC frequently has a number of our parents in The Nutcracker “Party Scene”. Please let Lisa, Doug, Roman, or Tracy know. Also, if you are or happen to know a notable, local celebrity who would like to be under the bright lights, just give us a call.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to any of us at any time. If you have a general question, please feel free to send it to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 860-570-0440.
We hope you enjoy BTC’s 2012 The Nutcracker performance season as much as all of us. We work very hard and enjoy the excitement of watching your children and many others deliver a professional and entertaining performance of this wonderful holiday classic.
