Marguerite de Anguera was born on February 21, 1911 in Rochester, NY. Dancing was her childhood dream and her love for dance would last her entire life. Her career would span every aspect of dancing, from ballet to Radio City Music Hall, Broadway, night clubs and theater, from teaching to choreography.

Marguerite graduated from Barnard College in 1932 and went on to study and perform with some of the greatest ballet and modern choreographers of the era, including Agnes de Mille, Marge Champion and the original Jooss Ballet, performing in Europe and all over the United States. Marguerite wrote, taught and choreographed various musicals, modern dance and balletic productions.

During Ms. de Anguera’s residency at BTC in 2002, Tracy Dorman staged her ballet Apres Degas on the company. Dancer Carolyn Paine expressed that “having the opportunity to meet and work with Ms. Marguerite de Anguera when the Ballet Theatre Company first performed ‘Apres Degas’ is one of my favorite ballet memories. She was in her 90s at the time and still filled with energy and grace... even as a young dancer here, I knew I wanted to go on to choreograph, so it was so special to spend time with and be inspired by a female choreographer who really paved the way in American ballet. I especially loved her sense of humor and how she brought that to her ‘Apres Degas’ story ballet-this ...inspired me with many of my future works. I am so happy that Ballet Theatre Company is continuing to honor Ms. de Anguera’s legacy by performing her ballet.
